📖 Synopsis
Coco follows Miguel Rivera, a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a great musician despite his family's generations-old ban on music.
Miguel idolizes the legendary singer Ernesto de la Cruz and desperately wants to prove that music is his true calling. During the Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos, a mysterious chain of events transports Miguel into the extraordinary Land of the Dead.
There, Miguel encounters his deceased relatives and meets Héctor, a charming and mysterious trickster who becomes his unexpected companion. Together, they begin searching for answers about Miguel's family history and the reason music became forbidden in his family.
As Miguel journeys through the colourful Land of the Dead, he discovers that his family's past contains secrets that could completely change what he believes about his ancestors, his musical idol and himself.
The story explores family, memory, identity, dreams, tradition and the importance of remembering the people who came before us. Pixar says the filmmakers spent years researching Mexican communities, traditions and family life while developing the film. 1
🎬 Movie Review
Coco is a visually rich animated adventure that combines music, fantasy and family drama with a story about remembering the people who came before us.
Miguel's love of music provides the central conflict. His family believes music caused pain in previous generations, while Miguel sees music as an essential part of who he is. This conflict gives the story its emotional foundation.
The Land of the Dead is one of the film's most memorable elements. Pixar created a colourful supernatural world filled with enormous architecture, glowing marigold bridges, spirits and generations of deceased family members. The visual world supports the film's themes of memory and family connection. 2
The relationship between Miguel and Héctor is also central to the story. Their journey gradually reveals important truths about Miguel's family and transforms what initially appears to be a simple search for a famous musician into something much more personal.
The voice cast features Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel, Gael García Bernal as Héctor and Benjamin Bratt as Ernesto de la Cruz, alongside Alanna Ubach, Renée Victor, Jaime Camil and Ana Ofelia Murguía. 3
The film's music is another major part of its identity, with songs such as Remember Me helping connect the characters and the story's themes of memory, family and legacy.
